How to read these prices

There is no official AKC price list by breed. AKC only publishes a broad purebred purchase band of about $500–$5,000 plus ownership costs. Our companion ranges are triangulated ballparks for reputable pet-quality asks—not mill floors and not five-figure show outliers.

Ranges are approximate U.S. companion asking bands. We cross-check PetBudget’s large ad study (80% middle of listings), marketplace medians where available, insurer/breed guides, and our single-breed price pages. Markets move—confirm locally.

Every breed now has a long-form cost profile at /{breed-id}-cost—purchase ballparks when we track them, plus first-year, monthly, food, and grooming planning. Examples: Labrador cost, French Bulldog cost, Golden Retriever cost, English Bulldog cost.

Puppy price FAQs

Does the AKC publish official puppy prices by breed?
No. AKC’s financial-prep guidance gives a broad purebred purchase range of roughly $500–$5,000 and separate ownership costs—not fixed stickers for Labrador, French Bulldog, or any other breed. Local breeders set asking prices.
Which dog breeds are most expensive to buy?
In many U.S. markets, high-demand companions like French Bulldogs, some designer mixes, and scarce specialty breeds sit at the top of asking tags. Our price compare hub ranks approximate companion ranges—not viral outlier sales.
Are these live puppy prices?
No. Ranges are triangulated U.S. companion asking ballparks from large ad studies (e.g. PetBudget), marketplace listing medians, insurer/breed guides, and our single-breed price pages where we have them. Always confirm with breeders, rescues, and current listings.
Does a higher puppy price mean a healthier dog?
Not by itself. Pay for health testing, transparent contracts, and ethical breeding—not color fads or pressure tactics. A cheap puppy that skips screening is rarely a bargain.
