Lassie: AKC calls this Collie one of the most famous dogs of all time, from a movie and TV series spanning the 1950s–70s. Our catalog: Developed in Scotland for herding sheep. Rin Tin Tin: AKC: German Shepherd, star of the film and TV series. Britannica: a puppy rescued in 1918 from a bombed German kennel in France by U.S. soldier Lee Duncan, later a Warner Bros. star; the character was played over the years by a series of German Shepherds. Hachikō: AKC’s Akita history: born 1923; belonged to Tokyo Imperial University professor Hidesaburō Ueno; after Ueno died, the golden-red Akita returned to Shibuya Station every day for a decade until his own death in 1935. Memorialized in books, films, and a statue at the station. That is devotion as a story—not a promise that every Akita will wait on a platform. Balto: AKC: the animated movie was based on a true Siberian Husky story. Our Husky card is a high-energy northern breed (energy 5/5)—not an automatic sled hero.

AKC also lists Trakr, a German Shepherd credited with rescuing the last survivor of the 9/11 attacks, and notes President Lincoln’s dog Fido as breed unknown. Our Pembroke Welsh Corgi card notes Queen Elizabeth II owned the breed—royal mascots still herd.

A Collie can be globally famous while another breed leads AKC registrations. Rankings move year to year; see most popular dog breeds and AKC’s popularity releases. French Bulldogs can top a registration list without starring in a 1950s TV serial.
