Chihuahua Head Types

Apple Head Chihuahua

The AKC Standard Head Type

Apple Head Chihuahuas have a distinctive rounded, dome-shaped skull that resembles an apple. This is the official breed standard recognized by the AKC. Key characteristics include:

  • Rounded, apple-shaped skull
  • Large, prominent eyes that may bulge slightly
  • Shorter snout with a well-defined stop
  • Compact, well-proportioned head
  • Often has a molera (soft spot on the skull)

Apple Head Chihuahuas are the most common type and are preferred in show rings.

Deer Head Chihuahua

The Alternative Head Type

Deer Head Chihuahuas have a more elongated head shape that resembles a young deer. While not the AKC standard, they're still popular and often have fewer health issues:

  • Longer, more elongated head shape
  • Longer snout with a less pronounced stop
  • Eyes that are less prominent
  • More proportional facial features
  • Often larger overall size

Deer Head Chihuahuas may have fewer breathing issues due to their longer snouts.

Chihuahua Coat Types

Smooth Coat (Short-Haired)

The Most Common Coat Type

Smooth Coat Chihuahuas have short, glossy fur that lies close to the body. This is the most common coat type and requires minimal grooming:

  • Short, glossy fur
  • Low maintenance grooming
  • Minimal shedding
  • Easy to keep clean
  • Available in both Apple Head and Deer Head

Smooth Coat Chihuahuas are perfect for owners who want minimal grooming requirements.

Long Coat

Elegant and Flowing

Long Coat Chihuahuas have longer, softer fur with beautiful feathering on ears, legs, and tail. They require more grooming but are stunning:

  • Long, soft, flowing fur
  • Feathering on ears, legs, and tail
  • Regular brushing required
  • More prone to matting
  • Available in both head types

Long Coat Chihuahuas need regular grooming to prevent matting and keep their coat beautiful.

Chihuahua Size Categories

Standard Chihuahua

Standard Chihuahuas typically weigh 3-6 pounds and stand 6-9 inches tall. This is the official AKC size range.

Teacup Chihuahua

Teacup is a marketing term for Chihuahuas under 3-4 pounds. Not an official breed standard and may have increased health risks.

Larger Chihuahuas

Some Chihuahuas, especially Deer Head varieties, may exceed 6 pounds. While not show standard, they can be healthier due to larger size.

Caring for All Types of Chihuahuas

Grooming Needs

Smooth Coat Chihuahuas need minimal grooming - just weekly brushing and occasional baths. Long Coat Chihuahuas require daily brushing to prevent matting, especially around the ears, legs, and tail. Both types need regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care.

Exercise Requirements

All Chihuahua types are low-energy dogs that don't require extensive exercise. Short daily walks and indoor playtime are usually sufficient. However, they still need mental stimulation through training and interactive toys.

Health Considerations

Chihuahuas are generally healthy but can be prone to certain conditions like dental problems, patellar luxation, and heart issues. Apple Head Chihuahuas may have more breathing issues due to their shorter snouts, while Deer Head varieties often have fewer respiratory problems. Extremely small "Teacup" Chihuahuas may have increased health risks.

Training & Socialization

All Chihuahua types benefit from early socialization and consistent training. They can be stubborn and may develop "small dog syndrome" if not properly trained. Positive reinforcement methods work best. Socialize them with people, other dogs, and different environments from a young age.
