Double Coat German Shepherd
German Shepherds have a double coat: a dense undercoat for insulation and a protective outer coat. Expect heavy seasonal “blowouts.” Consistent brushing (2–4x weekly), a de-shedding tool, and occasional baths help manage shedding.
- Do not shave: it can damage coat function and texture.
- Use an undercoat rake during shedding seasons (spring, fall).
- High-quality diet supports skin and coat health.
Similar double-coated breeds include the Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute.
